Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences.
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
26:38
All experiences are valid, we can acknowledge our own experiences even when others may have been worst
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
27:18
The past 18 months we have experienced cascading trauma beyond covid.
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
29:19
As humans we do not always change our coping skills when they are not working, we tend to just elevate the same skills.
Kate Meltzer
29:34
It’s an AMBER alert
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
31:44
Trauma diminishes our sense of self and elevates our sense of hopelessness. We lose ourselves in trauma
Sarah Ruderman
32:59
I would love to hear more about how past trauma impacts experiences of "newer" trauma? What happens when that compounds.
Kate Meltzer
33:26
Thanks for sharing that, Heidi
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
34:41
There is layers and levels of trauma and we often can talk ourselves out of our own trauma because "it isn't as bad as others"
Denise Crevin
37:49
Is it common to feel the impact of trauma more when the traumatic experiences are subsiding? Now that things are returning to "normal", things feel even harder.
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
39:01
New trauma brings up old trauma, our brain stores trauma together so when new trauma happens everything just gets deeper. Some shut down and some also respond by going into overdrive
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
42:20
Back of our brains is more primitive, and basic. The more forward is more sophisticated. Thinking, reasoning and self control happens in the front.
Ellen Dietrick
47:50
How do we improve it all? It’s so complex!
lisa tenenbaum
48:13
OH MY, that is exactly what is gong on with me...
Shelley Rossman
48:28
Me too! So helpful to hear this.
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
48:39
our brains are wired for Fight/Flight/Freeze which impacts our bodies, including our sleep. Our brains are trying to keep us alive
Jodi Jarvis
49:15

Heidi Hoover (she/her)
52:15
During the pandemic I learned that my husband and I both panic-buy canned tuna. :)
Sarah Meytin
55:49
I wish my sleep doctor had explained why I had so much trouble sleeping last year!
Jodi Jarvis
55:53
Note to self - do not hoard broken teeth!
WBT ECC
56:26
how do you go back to not a covid brain?
Ellen Dietrick
56:31
It seems like it has changed over the course of covid
Lisa Whitman
56:37
How long do you think it will take to “recover” from this? Do we think it will be a year, like “typical” trauma?
Cory Willson
56:41
How do we deal with the situation when lizard and thinking brain are in disagreement? What do you tell people?
Ellen Dietrick
56:54
Seems to getting worse
Ellen Dietrick
57:29
How can we help parents/colleagues through this?
Heidi Hoover (she/her)
57:46
And the decisions we’re making now re: reopening also have the risk to people’s lives.
Michael Wikes
58:30
How to cope with students' parents and/or family members who are manifesting all the negativity, cynicism, Covid brain, etc. but are in complete denial that anything is out of sorts?
Patricia Goldstick
58:31
Yes! For the first time recently I felt like I can't do this anymore. It's too much responsibility. And this came on after we survived so much and most of us are vaccinated now.
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
59:47
As ECE educators we where also "back" well before others who are just now coming back, we also know we have a bit to go before our students are vaccinated.
Rebecca Weiner
59:59
Yes! This feels like the loneliest and most overwhelming part of the pandemic. It also feels like there is a rush “back to normal” rather than “growing forward” and the freedom to feel and heal is being compromised in the name of “progress”
Shelley Rossman
01:00:31
I agree completely with Rebecca’s last comment.
lisa tenenbaum
01:01:21
YES, I am yearning for my recovery, like I need the vacation, but it is NEVER COMING
Ellen Dietrick
01:02:08
What does the recovery look like?
Heidi Hoover (she/her)
01:03:41
My sermon last week was about how much our society is based on trust.
Alyse Eisenberg
01:04:13
I agree!
lisa tenenbaum
01:05:05
YES, exactly...
Rebecca Weiner
01:06:19

Thank you for that piece of self-compassion!
Aliza Plotkin (She/Her)
01:11:39
How do we help parents not pass the trauma on! As a parent I have thought about this constantly
Margaret Heidema
01:15:17
I work in DC area where we had to close school for protests/ insurrections/ covid etc and older pre K students did experience some of the trauma and acted out in various ways
Heidi Hoover (she/her)
01:16:29
Thank you. This was both interesting and helpful.

This has been so helpful. I realized as you were talking that these types of sessions are exactly that I haven’t signed up for. Instead I’ve focused on what must be done to keep us open. Yet this is so much what I do need.
Lisa Whitman
01:17:24
Thank you so much. You described so much of my experience perfectly. It’s very validating to hear why we all feel the way we do.
